Compositor estadounidense. Hijo de un solista litúrgico judío ruso, emigró con su familia a Nueva York en 1893. Trabajó como cantante callejero y mesero cantante antes de comenzar a escribir canciones. Su primera canción publicada, "Marie from Sunny Italy, apareció en 1907; su nombre fue impreso como "Irving Berlin por error. En 1911 escribió el gran éxito de la época de moda del ragtime de Tin Pan Alley, "Alexander's Ragtime Band. Se estima que escribió más de 1.500 canciones. Algunas de sus canciones son "Cheek to Cheek y "God Bless America. Escribió la partitura para varios filmes exitosos; su música para Holiday Inn (1942) incluyó "White Christmas, una de las canciones de mayor éxito comercial de todos los tiempos. Berlin escribió la partitura de 19 shows de Broadway (entre ellos Annie Get Your Gun, 1946) y de 18 filmes.
